Garner Road Celebrates 20 years! In 1990, Hank Mattocks had a vision to help kids and decided to use the game of basketball as an avenue to their hearts, minds and souls. Hank’s war cry was to have Garner Road impact the lives of children spiritually, academically and physically. It is with those marching orders that we have 20 successful years of helping to mold boys and girls into people with a purpose. Our alumni are now, teachers, lawyers, NBA players, Youth Directors, Coaches, Youth Counselors and contributing members of their communities. We have been a part of the Garner Road YMCA which is one of the few Heritage (African American Independent) YMCAs left in the country. As partners we strive to serve the communities and families to improve their lives and give the kids a safe haven to learn, exercise and enjoy their time as kids. We will continue to honor this commitment by improving our ways and means of getting boys and girls to understand the importance of being an asset to this world. Motivating them to be the best they can be and follow their dreams by showing them the path they must take to get there. So we would like to thank all of those who have participated, volunteered and those who contributed to the program. Because of you, we have been able to carry out this vision and this will be our eternal purpose. |
